Struggling with Mould in Your Bathroom?
Quite a significant chunk of Homeowners and renters in Medway, Maidstone, and across the UK often face persistent bathroom mould due to poor ventilation. Here’s what we hear from our clients:
- Black Mould Growth: Mould on walls, ceilings, silicone, and grout creates health risks and damages bathroom aesthetics, especially in humid winter months, and is probably the number one reason our clients come to us.
- Damp and Condensation: Clients generally rely on a budget extractor fan - or open their bathroom window when they don't have one - to try to remove moisture. If this method doesn't work they tend to have a bigger moisture load than their current solutions can handle - which is where we come in.
- Health Concerns: Mould spores can trigger allergies or respiratory problems, worrying families, especially with children or elderly members. Landlords now have legislative duty of care to ensure their rental properties are fit for purpose.
- Not sure where to go: Clients have historically had trouble finding a reliable service that they can trust to deliver the goods when it comes to stopping condensation, damp & mould.
Why Do Bathrooms Get Mouldy?
Mould thrives in damp, poorly ventilated bathrooms, and our experts at the Techmeisters identify several reasons for this:
- Moisture Load: When we take a bath or shower, that warm moisture is able to evaporate into the air. You can sometimes see the 'steam' where moisture is making it into the air. The amount of moisture we send into the air through cooking, washing, drying clothes and indeed simply breathing! This is similar to adding water to a bucket. The faster you add water to the bucket, the higher the water level climbs!
- Ventilation Methods: Ventilation methods, such as employing an extractor fan, a PIV, or opening windows and doors, is how we try to relieve the moisture load. This is akin to popping a hole at the bottom of the bucket. cracking a window is a small hole. opening the window wide makes a bigger hole. Having a basic extractor fan is a small hole. Having a powerful extractor fan is a bigger hole. Ventilation methods try to evacuate the moisture from inside the property, before it has the chance to condense inside.
- Condensation: If at any point you are making more moisture than the ventilation methods can cope with, your bucket fills quicker than your can drain it, and you get a spillage! Condensation occurs which is where you get the steamed up windows and the wet look on the walls, ceilings and tiles.
- Moisture is a moulds best friend: The more moisture you give mould, and the more often you give moisture to mould, and the longer the moisture is allowed to sit before drying out, gives mould the perfect breeding ground to start taking root and growing.
- You find mould where moisture is: Typically, the worst place for mould in a property is in the bathroom. Because our washing rituals kick up a lot of moisture load, we find that bathrooms suffer from condensation, damp & mould the worst. You might also notice mould growths randomly appear on the colder extremities of the property, such as top floor ceilings (directly under the loft space), windows and window reveals. This is because the moisture is condensing regularly in these particular places, and allowing a place in your home for mould to start growing.
