This is a long standing client of ours, who needed better lighting in their workshop, and also called us a few weeks later to take a look at their 3 phase metal saw. They were getting on without it but their temporary set up wasn't convenient at all.
We were able to introduce extra bay lighting with high power LED fittings which hung from the ceiling, and walked away with their electric saw operating as usual!
we have since been back since this original post (several times!)
After a bit of expansion to their workload, they were finding themselves constantly chopping and changing what machines were currently in use, most due to the lack of commando sockets available, and the demand of the machines meant they had to plan what machines they could use at any on time, rather than having the flexibility they really wanted.
we have since given them a whole new single phase and three phase power delivery circuit, with several commando socket outlets for the the team to operate as they wish, without worrying about which machine they had to wait on before they could use the next one they wanted to.
we have also been back to help them with their 3 phase metal band saw. The first time, before we had added more lighting to their workshop, was to investigate why it had just suddenly stopped working. with a bit of tinkering it came back to life, after tightening all of the electrical terminals. Must have been a loose connection!
we were then invited back after its lubrication pump had failed. So whilst they could still use the band saw, they had to lubricate the machine by hand. which obviously is more labourious and was slowing them down. They had already found a replacement, so we fitted it. The very next day, the pump had basically melted.
It then comes down to two main potential causes - the pump was faulty out of the factory, or there is a common denominator that is killing these pumps. For a pump to get so hot it melts the outer casing, it tends to be getting stuck, or under an abnormally high load ie sucking something really shouldnt be / getting clogged up.
It turns out, the metal shavings, or metal swarf that has gradually been building up in the sump had not been cleaned out for at least 3 years. the mounds of swarf that had been growing under the surface of the lubricant had built up so much, the pump was starting to suck these metal filings up. That was our good guess, anyway.
we advised the client to give the sump a good clean out, order another pump in, and we'll fit the second one, and we had a warm fuzzy feeling this new pump wouldn't fail the way the last two had.
No more than one week later, still applying lubricant by hand, they team had taken some time to give the band saw a nice clean, emptied the metal swarf from the sump, and the new pump had arrived. New fresh pump fitted. automatic lubrication back online. No more failures. Case closed!
